Darice Sketch Box Easel with Palette
I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my daughter, and was very disappointed when it arrived. The wood is poorly cut and had splinters in it, one of the hinges had fallen off in the box (it looked like the holes for hinge screws had been poorly drilled) and the easel was much heavier than similar ones I had seen in the art store.
Seriously, I've owned a number of French easels and hardware is always falling off. If you lose a piece, a quick stop at the hardware store will fix it. Don't worry you'll just look more authentic, because a well-used French easel is a fairly pathetic sight.
In my experience, the Darice is good for the price. If you've never owned a French easel, you'll have fun setting it up the first time, since the manufacturer believes an instruction sheet is an unnecessary luxury. Here is a hint: bits can be loosened, but nothing is meant to come off, including those little metal brackets on the front legs.
It's easy after you've done it.
Monet French Easel
The easel is simple to work with, sturdy and is the perfect way to "package" the paints/supplies between sessions. Since the medium involved is oil paint, it remains usable within the easel when it is closed down to a box. This is a well-made product, nice wood and quality metal parts, adjusts easily. The wooden construction does make it a bit weighty for a child to tote, but I can't see a way around that.Great product
