Royal & Langnickel Oil Color Painting Easel Set
I bought this as a starting point for learning oils. And while the kit got me going, I quickly learned enough about oil supplies to where if I could do it all again, I may have chosen differently. The paints come in 12ml tubes(1/3 of the size of standard studio tubs) and in my experience were much drier than other oils I have purchased which made them alot harder to work with. I've also since changed out the palette, palette knife(the included plastic is bad) and many of the brushes. The included easel is VERY nice as is the tote.All in all, if you are looking to try oils, I think this is a great starting point at a good price(just get some linseed oil for the paints). Just expect to want to swap some stuff out as you go along.

Recently, after enjoying an afternoon at a local art museum my husband and I suggested to each other it would be fun to try to paint a picture ourselves! With a wedding anniversary and a trip to New England just a couple of weeks away I decided this would a great gift to "us".Two sets were ordered and sent Free Shipping through Amazon.com. They arrived via FedEx four days later.
Inside the packing box were two nice boxes containing our art sets. The tote bag is made well enough with plenty of room for additional materials and comes with a strap to carry it over your shoulder. The adjustable table easel is very nice, not cheap pine, but a heavier wood with a grain. I don't know much about brushes or paints, but for us beginners I think they will be adequate. A wood palette, a board canvas and a stretch canvas were included.
I am pleased with this purchase, and at $39.95 it was a much better price than other sellers of the same item on Amazon. We will order more for gifts.
If the manufacturer could improve upon or add to this set I would suggest an outline of oil painting basics; a color mixing chart, and a charcoal pencil. There could also be a suggestion to separately purchase a small container of linseed oil and turpentine for mixing and cleaning.
We look forward to our trip and painting something special along the way!

Nice set for a beginner. I am not a beginner but I wanted a cheap travel easel and that's exactly what I got. The easel is great, and I love the tote that came with it. Only problem is the tote was already torn when I got it out of the box. Not to hard to sew back up though. Came with so much for the price. Like I said, a wonderful gift for a beginning artist. The palette is flimsy. But the brushes and paint isn't bad. Also, came with two small, but nice, canvas's. It lost a star for being cheap and torn when I got it. But you get what you pay for. What a nice little portable easel this has been. It completely fulfills several particular needs I have. I have several easels of different sizes, shapes, functions...big ones, small ones...good ones and bad. Surprisingly, for the cost, this is one of the most versatile I own.Other than my office, which is not really an office per se, but rather a largish multiple functional room, I paint either on my back porch or on an old wooden table I have stuck in the woods behind my house. When I paint on the porch or in the woods I use this particular easel. When I am in the woods and the light changes, it is an easy matter to move all my work stuff.
This little thing is extremely well built considering its cost. It is so simple to set up that even I, who has problems even stacking two brick together correctly, find it impossible to mess up. It is stoutly built and can take quite a bit of abuse. I, for the most part paint small things and use small canvases or canvas boards. I do not paint large sweeping landscapes. I paint flowers, leaves, bugs and other critters. I also use a very limited number of colors. (I find that mixing my own color is half the fun of painting). The drawers on this unit hold enough to meet my needs.
There are a couple of things to note here:
As one reviewer as pointed out, the drawer does tend to stick at times. I solved this by using some wax (Paraffin) on the sides and that solved that problem.
The palette is wood. I use both oils and acrylics. Acrylics do not do well on wooden palettes. I solved this by spraying, with several coats, the entire palette with clear acrylic sealer. Works like a charm.
I have two other easels that are designed much like this one...or at least use the same concept. They are large, they are heavy and they were very expensive. Sadly to say I find myself using this little thing more than the others...could have saved me some coin had I had this unit available years ago.
To sum up my impression and feelings over this easel:
It is very inexpensive. I paid about fifteen dollars more at a local art supply store for mine. I like cheap.
It is simply. I like simple things...no hassle here...it is what it is.
It is extremely functional for small works. This is what I needed it for.
It is extremely portable.
It is very well made and very stable.
Did I mention that it is inexpensive?
This is a good product and you get your monies worth with it...very, very functional.

This is a very straightforward design.To use it, simply unlock it and pull the the board up. You don't even need a manual to set it up smoothly first time!
And despite its simple design, it does not look like a poor-man's tool. Three of my best friends guessed its price -at $40-50!
Also, this easel is very firmly built. It is designed with metal joints and geometrically stiff shapes. This means that in order to break it, either the hard metal joints have to give in or a piece of the easel has to break in half; both of which are improbable.
(I've used easels not built this way; they are, instead, built by pressing flat-ended screws against the wooden pieces and relying on the friction between the screw and the wooden surface to hold it up. Over time, the wooden surface gives way, and my easel falls down even though every piece is fine. That won't happen with this beauty!)
This easel, compared to other tripod designs, is great for small-scaled close observations of small objects on the table; you can literally paint objects that stand 12 inches from your eyes. (I personally used it to paint dried flowers I place on my table; my pictures are approximately 3 x 5 inches)

Well designed and made. Minimal assembly effort needed. You need a #1 phillips head screw driver and about 2.5 ft. X 4 ft. of clear floor space. Observe the base for an assembly the should make clear how to configure the slide guide screw, spacer and nut. I did not see any written instructions and apparently they are not actually needed, but instructions are reassuring.All the parts were in good order and nothing was missing. Assembly took about 15 plus minutes, but I was in no hurry at all.
It looks great, seems sturdy and I expect many years uf use.
But now the screw is stripped in the adjustment knob and my husband had to gerry rig a new knob for me.
This easel was perfect in every way for me, not too big for my 8' ceiling, easy to move about and light weight.
However without an easy system for adjusting height it is almost useless...
I have learned to only buy easels with a ratchet system for adjustment from now on.

I hope the product holds up to a child's usage of the product. The cost for the item, in my opinion was overpriced. It is merely a piece of colored particle board with a roll of paper.As the purchaser I'm disappointed but it was well received by the receiver of the gift and her parents.

It is used by about 9 children ages 18 months to 5 years and fills their needs nicely.It was easy to hang taking only about 15 minutes. I wish i loved this product more, but like other reviewers, the easle is a good size, but the paper roll is TOO SMALL, and there is at least 4 more inches is could be wider on this product, making it even more dissapointing. The roll itself, could be another 2 inches wider the way the product is now. There is so much room and so little paper, it doesn't make any sense. none the less, the concept of putting it on a wall, which can easliy be removed and the chalk board are nice. Sturdy backing and the cups are a plus to store the crayons etc... The paper though rolls down with little force when drawing on the paper, making it s little annoying for my toddler to draw when the paper keeps moving and bunching up... once again, could be remedied if the designers in the Alex company thought a bit. The star that holds the paper, could have a stopper or be a little tighter, the bottom plastic piece that "holds" the paper, is too far from the board, so the paper just falls out... I plan on widening the holders for the paper out and getting a wider roll of paper from another company, they sell them 15 inch, 18 inch etc...and the plastic piece on the bottom will have to be fixed too. 12" is just TOO SMALL to be really be creative. I am dissapointed. but will make due with it, pending adjustments.UPDATE: I added some clips on the sides to hold it in place, and widened it to hold 18" paper, MUCH BETTER now. Wasnt to hard to do, I have a picture, by amazons system saids the format is 'unsupported' oh well.

What is up with this, Amazon? Don't you read the issues that you ask people to note? The instructions that come with it say that screws are included, I have yet to have them included. Going to the hardware store to hunt down the metal stop and screws is something I didn't expect to do and is a PITA. I gave this two stars in regards to customer service. I'm sure the palette is fine once I'm able to install it.

i would recommend this to intermediate artists like myself. i love how it turns into a case i just got it today. it doesnt give you instructions on how to put some pieces together but i figured it out by myself. im 15 and i love this product the company that make this is the company i will be buying from for my art supplies. the only con i dislike is when you carry it the top supplies falls out of the container and, the pastel is very messy and im afraid it will get all over the box if i carry it. the pros i like is that it comes with 2 sketchbooks one for charchol and graphite and one for pastel and pencils. If you purchased the supplies separately you would pay over 100. getting a easel that turns into a case and has all of the supplies for 60 dollars is a really good deal. But i would not recommend this too little kids they can easily swallow the pastel and charchol sticks.

Looked at other reviews that said wood box fell apart and items where broken, but said look at all the good ones. Look at how much this thing is actually going for on the original website ($120). It must be worth the money and on rare occasions things happen.Well let me tell you!!!
1. Front piece of wood that has bottom part of the latch fell of immediately. Looks like it was never glued or nailed down in the first place. That didn't bother so much because I own crazy glue. Problem fixed in seconds.
2. ALL SIX charcoal pencils in bottom drawer are broken into AT LEAST three pieces. No I did not do this. They were like this the first time I opened the drawer.
3. What is this wood box made of??? Cheap cheap wood is used. I feel like the whole thing will fall apart soon.
So happy I didn't pay the $120 and got it for $65 on here with free shipping. Still upset I wasted that money on such a cheap item.

I am so glad I bought this quality set...it is really nice. I haven't drawn anything since college art class and suddenly decided to start up again. This set is everything I wanted and more, and such a bargain for all that is included. The case is well made and everything organized wonderfully within. The plastic inserts can always be removed to make more room for more supplies later, but I like how everything stays in place with them in. The easel is really great...a feature I didn't think I would ever use, but you need to have your drawing elevated to get the right perspective, and so I have used it every time. if i could give this a two and a half star rating i'd have done so but i can't, and two seems a little harsh.anyways for what it is, it's not that bad, yet not amazing either. i bought it cause i was working on a piece of armour for a hand and needed to mount it on something. this seemed like the best solution at the time but turned out to not work at all. this was because the thumb isnt really all that moveable, it can move at the joint as seen in the picture, but (for people with a little anatomy knowledge) the flexor pollicis brevis area is totally solid and therefor constrains many of the natural looking positions a hand should be able to display. otherwise, the fingers moved quite nicely and naturally but only in the direction of the joints, in other words, they can't be splade outwards.
i can see that for a (very) basic sketching of a hand or displaying some jewellery this might be usefull, but otherwise for the price i ended up paying with shipping i'd reccomend looking for something else or making a chiken wire modle hand in the position you need as i did for my project. that depends on how 'hands' on you feel like getting.. sorry i had to :P

My fiance got me this for Christmas and while it was a VERY sweet thought this easel is awful! The three unsupported legs make it unstable and since EVERYTHING is adjustable it is difficult to make it level. Expect to get out a level EVERYTIME you want to set it up. It is usable but not very convenient. As a former art student and art teacher I have seen and used many types of easels. You are better off with something with more support for the legs and less things to adjust which may not be as portable but better to use.

I bought this easel after reading so many rave reviews. This easel is even recommended by some well know plein air artists. I have to say... I just don't get it. The easel is pretty good. It is everything I wanted and more. I can keep all of my paints inside the drawer even when I fold it and put it away. The legs are all adjustable and easy to setup. The only thing I don't like about the easel is the bolts. The bolts are used to secure the legs in place. Some of them came crooked on the threaded part and I can't get them to go on correctly. They still work the way they are, but I just wish they sat flush. My thumbs hurt after tightening the bolts a few times also. It could just be because I as a wuss though. Also, there are no instructions so I had to figure out how to open it up into an easel myself. Not that difficult, but would've been better with instructions. Overall, I am very happy with the easel and it is perfect for what I use it for.Save 61% Off
