Alvin Heritage™ Deluxe French Easel

Alvin Heritage Deluxe French EaselThis is a very good easel. However, when my daughter and I opened up the box on Christmas there were no instructions on how to set it up. I was VERY angry about this and sent an email to the company. After carefully studding the photo on the box we managed to put it together. Very frustrating without instructions.

Lightweight Multi-purpose Aluminum Easel with Travel Tote Bag

Lightweight Multi-purpose Aluminum Easel with Travel Tote BagIf you are looking for a light weight easel to support displays it would be a fantastic deal. I wanted them for my studio to share with students when we moved outside. They were a little less stable than I was hoping for, Still, at about $13. a piece....I am quite satisfied with the 3 I purchased. and I do like being able to store them in there own bags.

Lightweight but a bit flimsy and clumsy to set up. Wiggles too much, even after set up, but this was a substitute purchase while on a trip, so for temporary use was ok.

Royal Brush Langnickel Naples Mini Tabletop Easel

Royal Brush Langnickel Naples Mini Tabletop EaselI just received this item on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. To give a "heads up", some assembly is required but it is not too complicated. This easel appears to be everything that it is advertised to be and I am in the process of setting up my paint-by-number canvas into it. However, the canvas just barely fits into it, not just length-wise but depth-wise as well. One other thing I am experimenting with is attaching a clip-op book light onto the easel to give my work some additional lighting.

This is a well-made product and will serve you well if you're using smaller canvases. I have a larger easel that I use every week but I really wanted something smaller for the 8x10 and 5x5 canvases I paint. Sturdy construction, decent wood, and small size make this a convenient option for me.

Art Advantage Mouth Atomizer

Art Advantage Mouth AtomizerThis is such an effective way to bypass aerosol spray cans. You can control it easily with your breath. To prevent buildup in the intake tube, I use periodontal dental floss, which is bushy.

I just noticed I can adjust it .still working with it .Harder to get a spray than with my old one ,still works

Majestic Royal and Langnickel Long Handle Paint Brush Set, Bright, 7-Piece

Majestic Royal and Langnickel Long Handle Paint Brush Set, Bright, 7-PieceI own a large variety of brushes ranging from Kolinsky sables for oils and watercolors, the Bob Ross Collection, the Terry Harrison Collection, and many others. I have been searching for an oil/acrylic brush set with a medium stiffness for control, but soft enough for beautiful detail without lines and scratchiness. I first tried the Royal Majestic line in watercolor brushes when they were handmade to order. I still use those brushes on a regular basis. They have never lost their shape. They do not shed nor fray, and have excellently made ferrules and handles. These have turned out to be just as great as the watercolor brushes. I am delightfully pleased. The price is excellent as well! Where else can you find a long handled brush, sizes 4 24 for under $35. This is a pack of seven a great range of sizes. They fit everything that I needed. I was not disappointed at all. I was totally impressed! By the way, to keep them looking nice when using acrylics and oils, clean then with Murphy's wood oil soap and water then dry them with TLC.

Royal & Langnickel Essentials Sketching Pencil Set, 21-Piece

Royal & Langnickel Essentials Sketching Pencil Set, 21-PieceWhen I first started out doing art, I didn't care so much about quality. I just wanted pencils that did the trick.

Now that I am more experienced in the field, I have noticed that quality matters a lot.

The pencils in this package are very cheaply made. You may ask why this matters so much to a budding artist, or even an intermediate one. Well, you'll be sharpening pencils a lot in art and so you'll want a good sharpener and pencils that sharpen well. These pencils, however, do not sharpen well. You'll use a lot of your energy constantly trying to sharpen these things, when that energy should go towards honing your skills.

The white eraser is a bit too gummy like, a few uses and I already feel the structure beginning to weaken...

The sharpener is OK. But there are better ones (See my list below after review)

The only thing I liked about this kit were the charcoal sticks. I like to sharpen mine with sandpaper and these do produce nice dark tones.

The reason why I gave this product two stars is because, even though the greenhorn is apt to mow through tons of material just to get it right, I feel that higher quality art supplies will ease a lot of frustration the beginner will feel when they're first starting out in art. As the community knows, the hardest challenge in first learning art is learning how to see. The rest is just pencil mileage by application of knowledge from a teacher or textbook. And I feel that quality goes a long way in helping the beginner advance his or her skills.

If you want to REALLY get a good start at art (or good quality for continuing art), then I'd suggest the following:

For pencils, you can't go wrong with either Faber-castell or Staedlter. I myself use the Staedtler Mars Lumograph. You can find these in kits, containing various degrees (A good range for the beginner would generally be 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 7B and 8B. Pencils ending in H are harder and thus produce lighter tones while pencils ending in B are softer and produce darker tones.)

For erasers, I recommend the Staedlter White eraser (which is fairly cheap. Mine cost me about 2$ for a fairly good-sized stick). As for kneaded erasers, these are usually used to eraser thicker, heavier material like charcoal, but I recommend either Sanford or Prismacolor. Do not use any pink erasers for art, They leave a nasty pinkish residue on your paper and don't erase as good as the white (Infact, the only thing I ever use pink erasers for now is erasing stuff off of walls and desks.)

As for Sharpeners, you'll want one similar to the one included in this package, but bought from an art/ office supply store. The one included in the package was not as good as the metal one I picked up from Michael's for about two dollars. But if you REALLY want to get serious with it, I'd spend a bit more and get the KUM long-point sharpener. I use it almost exclusively and it is the best sharpener I've ever used. You can buy them here on Amazon or at any other art supply website (I've yet to see them sold in a store, unfortunately.) But it's a bit more expensive than your average sharpener (Mine was $10, shipping included). But it's well worth it, considering the fact that you save more wood and get to the point easier and faster.

Overall, don't get this kit; infact, don't get a "Kit," at all. Do a bit of research and get supplies separately. It's a bit more painstaking but in the end you're getting better quality products. You may save time and cash going for this product, but you'll be doing yourself, or that aspiring artist you know, a great disservice by giving them a poorly-made product.

I bought this Late october the 25th or 26th and it showed up as expected. Acually, the first day of the "3-5days" which was a great plus. So, about this product.. I bought this because i'm not a huge professional artist that spends hours drawing and making a living off of it. I like to sketch, draw and cartoon. and this set allows me to do that with multiple tools and pencils. I love the variety and quality of these pencils. Including charcoal not just in pencil but block also, along with graphite bars. really lets me control where things go. I really love the woodless pencil, even though it doesnt keep a good point, (for long) But, i know that in about a year or more i will come back and buy another one when this set gets all used up. Thanks for a great product. I am truely happy with this set.

My daughter is taking her third semester of a drawing class. Her original pencils were used to nubs, and I bought this larger set as a replacement. She was thrilled to get everything she needed -lots of different lead weights as well as erasers and graphite. A perfect set for her classes.

Adams Easel Pad, 27 x 35.25 Inch, White (EP927341M)

Adams Easel Pad, 27 x 35.25 Inch, White
  • Unique fold out marker holder
  • Sturdy corrugate backer
  • Carrying handle
  • 50 sheets, White
  • 50 sheets
  • White

This works well with my Quartet tripod easel, but I had to improvise a little because the Quartet and Adams pads attach differently. In fact, it's more secure because the Quartet pads clamp on, but often fell off the easel while writing, but I attach the Adams pad through the handle loop and they stay on. I didn't give it 5 stars because the "Unique fold out marker holder" which I thought would be a nice feature was useless. It's part of the cardboard backing that supposed to fold up at an angle to hold markers, but it won't stay folded.

I bought the easel for home use and it has proved to be invaluable for a single parent. I write a list chores for my kids and they check them off as they do them. They use it to write down to let me know when we're running low on printer ink, when school projects are due, if the pets need food or whatever so I can do or buy what's necessary before there's a crisis. And we all use it to write down our schedules and of course, doodling. I bring up this point because the carry handle and cardboard backing make it easy to remove from the easel and place on the floor or table to write on, even for youngsters, and the paper is thick enough so medium point Sharpies don't bleed through to the next page even when someone gets in an artistic mood.

One thing that I wasn't happy about was how the pads were packaged and delivered. I bought a two pack, which turned out to just be two pads that were individually "packaged" in unfolded cardboard moving boxs with no other protection. They were simply placed between two unfolded packing boxes that were taped together around the edges to keep the pads from falling out. If it had rained the day they were delivered I would have found soggy flattened boxes of mushy pulp on my doorstep when I got home from work.

Cost much less then purchasing locally at an overpriced office store.
